Cheney, Washington

James Madison Moorman House – 1887

Built in 1887, the Moorman house is the only remaining example of Gothic Revival architecture in Cheney. The modest house features its original Gothic arch fenestration , wood drop cladding, and a later shed roof rear addition that housed the kitchen and bathroom. The house is believed to have been built by its original owner, Frank Sterling, a local architect. Facing demolition at its original location, it was moved through the efforts of City staff and the Historic Preservation Commission. Other direct costs of the move were covered by donated labor costs from Century Tel, Cheney Light Dept., and Davis Communications. The interior is being restored to house the Cheney Historical Museum. Donations for resoration cost are being accepted.

(Quelle: www.stadt-brandenburg.de)

Kapellbrücke("Chapel Bridge"), Luzern (+3d-PDF by 3dHH)

(75 kB at 3cm/px photoresolution) The Kapellbrücke ("Chapel Bridge" in German) is a 204 m (670 ft) long bridge crossing the Reuss River in the city of Lucerne in Switzerland. It is the oldest wooden bridge in Europe, and one of Switzerland's main tourist attractions. The covered bridge, constructed in 1333, was designed to help protect the city of Lucerne from attacks. Inside the bridge are a series of paintings from the 17th century depicting events from Luzern's history. Much of the bridge, and the majority of these paintings, were destroyed in a 1993 fire, though it was quickly rebuilt. Adjoining the bridge is the 140 feet tall Wasserturm (Water Tower), an octagonal tower made from brick, which has served as a prison, torture chamber, watchtower and treasury. Today the tower, which is part of the city wall, is used as the guild hall of the artillery association. The tower and the bridge are Lucerne's trademark and form the most photographed monument in the country. The modell is simplified, but otpimized for GoogleEarth. There is also an interactive 3d-PDF with the model, where yuo can rotate and zoom the model inside the PDF without having GoogleEarth or SketchUp installed (see link below).

St. Sebald Church – Nuremberg

The Sebaldus-church is the older of the two major double-tower churches in the Nuremberg Old Town. Originally built in 1230 as late romanesque basilica in the following centuries repeatedly rebuilt and expanded until 1483. With the increase of the two towers (to approximately 80m) it's received the final gothic form. From the original romanesque building is still conserved the west choir protruding between the towers. However, even here later 3 high gothic windows were implemented. In front of the midle window is adapted a crucifix made by Johan Wurzelbauer. Inside the church is the tomb of St. Sebaldus the patron saint of Nuremberg. Until the Reformation (since 1525 the Sebalduskirche is Evangelical Lutheran) found numerous pilgrimages to his grave. Furthermore, there are many important works of art, such as the "Bamberger window" by Albrecht Dürer, in the inner church. In the 2nd World War II, the church was badly damaged and in the years after rebuilt until 1952.

The Environmental Showcase Home (ESH) in Phoenix, Arizona was designed in response to the extreme climate of the Sonora desert. This project was commissioned by the Arizona Public Service, to introduce a full range of environmentally responsible design ideas, systems, and products to mass-market, production housing builders. Areas of special attention included climate-specific design, energy and water conservation, sensitive material selection, public health concerns, and waste reduction. The design team used both passive strategies and active systems to achieve the main goal of reducing residential energy use and overall environmental impact in mass-market, production building. Other initiatives toward this goal throughout the project were water conservation, waste reduction, and the evaluation of materials through a life-cycle assessment.

Washington DC

National Gallery of Art - East Building

The East Building of the National Gallery of Art was built between 1971 and 1978. Designed by I. M. Pei, the angles of the building reflect the angles of the streets bordering it, most notably Pennsylvania Avenue. The center of the building is a large atrium with a ceiling of space-frame glass pyramids. The building is faced with lavender-pink marble from the same quarry in Tennessee as the marble in John Russell Pope's 1941 West Building, creating a harmony between the two. Mauthalle

The evangelist church St. Andreas is the largest church building in Weißenburg and the tallest structure in the historical city core. It was built from 1294 to 1327 on the place of a previous church. The choir (quire) was built later and was intended to be the first part of a new, slightly rotated church building, which however was never finished. So it was integrated into the existing building, which leads to the noticable bent in the interior dome (not obviously visible from the outside). This also explains the place of the spire (west tower) set in front of the choir and finished in 1520. Further additions and modifications followed over the centuries. In 2007 the organ was renovated and inaugurated with a church service and concert. Today the church is used by the "Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirchengemeinde Weißenburg i. Bay."

Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II

The Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II (National Monument of Victor Emmanuel II) or Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland) or "Il Vittoriano" is a monument to honour Victor Emmanuel, the first king of a unified Italy. It is located in Rome, Italy. It occupies a site between the Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline Hill. The monument was designed by Giuseppe Sacconi in 1895; sculpture for it was parceled out to established sculptors all over Italy. It was inaugurated in 1911 and completed in 1935. The monument is built of pure white marble from Botticino, Brescia, and features majestic stairways, tall Corinthian columns, fountains, a huge equestrian sculpture of Victor Emmanuel and two statues of the goddess Victoria riding on quadrigas. The structure is 135 meters (490 ft) wide and 70 meters (230 ft) high. If the quadrigae and winged victories are included, the height is to 81 meters (265 ft). The monument holds the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame, built under the statue of Italy after World War I following an idea of General Giulio Douhet.

Curia Iulia, Rome

The curia per antonomasia was the Curia Hostilia in Rome, which was the building where the Senate usually met. The Senate, initially just a meeting of the city elders from all tribes (its name comes from "senex", which means "old man"), saw its powers grow together with the conquest that brought a town of humble origins to rule a large Republic (and then decrease steadily with the advent of the Empire). During their expansion, the Romans exported the model to every city that gained the status of Municipium, so that it had its own Senate and its own officials charged with local administration (although they weren't usually elected but nominated by the central government; the only place where officials were actually elected by the people was Rome itself, and by Imperial times even those elections, although kept for the sake of tradition, had no more significance). Senators themselves were not elected since the early Republic, having been transformed into a hereditary nobility. By the Imperial period, a curia was any building where local government held office, i.e. judicial proceedings, government meetings, bureaucracy, etc., and shortly afterwards the term started to refer also to the people making up the local administration.

The Palas is the main representative building of the castle and was the centre of imperial power. Apart from the repair after the destruction of the World War II the current gothic building was build in the years 1440-1442. Before there was a romanesque Palas, which was built around 1200. The east of the Palas subsequent romanesque double-chapel and the allocated Pagantower was built in the late 12 century probably under Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and his successors. The term "Pagantower" dates from the early 16th Century, when the existing typical romanesque wall decorations was interpreted as "pagan" images and statues and were largely removed. At the lower floor of the tower are still some parts of this wall decorations preserved. The external castle-walls falls much deeper to the ground than can be displayed in Google Earth.

Williamsburg Bridge

The longest suspension span in the world from 1903 to 1924, connects Manhattan and Brooklyn in New York City. The bridge is designed by Henry Hornbostel and engineered by Leffert L. Buck and Holton D. Robinson. The construction started in November 1896 and finished in December 1903. The main span is 488 meters, two meters longer than the Brooklyn Bridges previous record span. The bridge deck was originally designed for four traffic lanes, six trolley or subway tracks and two pedestrian lanes. Massive stiffening trusses were designed to keep the deck steady in wind and support the six rail tracks. Four of the track lanes were converted to road lanes in the 1920s. The center span is suspended from four 48 cm thick cables that consist of 7,696 individual wires each. The side spans are unsuspended and held up by truss supports. Four new towers and additional steel were added in the 1910s to support the side spans which were beginning to sag under the increasingly heavy traffic and subway cars. Since the 1980s, the bridge has undergone a thorough reconstruction to repair the damage caused by decades of lacked maintenance. Currently on average 110,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day.
