City-Theatre Fürth

The City Theatre Fuerth was build in 1901 and 1902 by the plans of the Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer in modern baroque architecture. Financed it was to a large part by donations from the citizens of Fürth. Upon the gable is a statue of a female torch bearer, a lion and a male figure lying at her feet. Recently, on the occasion of its 100-year anniversary the theater was restored extensively.

Dolmabahçe Sarayı - Dolmabahçe (Filledgarden) Palace

Dolmabahçe Palace was the first European-style palace in Istanbul and was built by Sultan Abdülmecid between 1842 and 1853, at a cost of five million Ottoman gold pounds, the equivalent of 35 tons of gold. The world's largest Bohemian crystal chandelier, a gift from Queen Victoria, is at the center hall. The chandelier has 750 lamps and weighs 4.5 tons.Dolmabahçe has the largest collection of Bohemian and Baccarat crystal chandeliers in the world, and one of the great staircases has bannisters of Baccarat crystal. The site of Dolmabahçe was originally a bay in the Bosphorus which was filled gradually during the 18th century to become an imperial garden, much appreciated by the Ottoman sultans; and it is from this garden that the name Dolmabahçe (Filledgarden) comes from. The palace that stands here today was built between 1842 and 1853 during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid, on the site of the old coastal palace of Beşiktaş, by the Armenian architects Garabet Amira Balyan and his son Nigoğayos Balyan. The palace is composed of three parts; the Mabeyn-i Hümâyûn (or Selamlık, the quarters reserved for the men), Muayede Salonu (the ceremonial halls) and the Harem-i Hümâyûn (the Harem, the apartments of the family of the Sultan). The palace is managed by Milli Saraylar Daire Başkanlığı (Directorate of National Palaces) responsible to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. The museum is open to public on weekdays from 9:00 to 15:00, except Mondays and Thursdays.

Çırağan Sarayı - Çırağan Palace

Çırağan Palace (Turkish: Çırağan Sarayı), a former Ottoman palace, is now a five-star hotel of the Kempinski Hotels chain. It is located on the European shore of the Bosporus between Beşiktaş and Ortaköy in Istanbul, Turkey. The palace, built by Sultan Abdülâziz, was designed by the famous Armenian palace architect Nigoğayos Balyan and constructed by his sons Sarkis and Hagop Balyan between 1863 and 1867. This was a period in which all Ottoman sultans used to build their own palaces rather than using those of their ancestors. Çırağan Palace is the last example of this period. The inner walls and the roof were made of wood, the outer walls of colorful marble. The palace was connected with a beautiful marble bridge to the Yıldız Palace on the hill behind. A very high garden wall protected the palace from the outer world.

Beylerbeyi Sarayı - Beylerbeyi Palace

The Beylerbeyi Palace (Turkish: Beylerbeyi Sarayı) is a palace located in Beylerbeyi neighbourhood of Istanbul, Turkey at the Asian side of the Bosphorus, situated just north of the Bosphorus Bridge today. Designed in the baroque style by Sarkis Balyan, Beylerbeyi Palace seems fairly restrained compared to the excesses of the earlier Dolmabahçe or Küçüksu palaces. It was commissioned by Sultan Abdülaziz (1830-1876) and built between 1861 and 1865 as a summer residence and a place to entertain visiting heads of state. Empress Eugénie of France visited Beylerbeyi on her way to the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 and had her face slapped by the sultan's mother for daring to enter the palace on the arm of Abdül Aziz. Other regal visitors to the palace included the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. The palace was the last place of captivity of the deposed sultan Abdulhamid II from 1912 until his death there in 1918. The palace looks its most attractive from the Bosphorus, from where its two bathing pavilions, one for the harem (women's only) and the other for the selamlık (men's only), can best be seen.

San Nicola in Carcere - Titular Church, Rome

San Nicola in Carcere (Italian, "St Nicholas in prison") is a titular church in Rome near the Forum Boarium in rione Ripa. The first church on the site was probably built in the 6th century, and a 10th century inscription may be seen on a fluted column next to the entrance, but the first definite dedication is from a plaque on the church dating to 1128. It was constructed in and from the ruins of the Forum Holitorium and its temples, along with a jail (carcer). Spolia from all these ancient remains is still apparent in the church's construction, most particularly three columns from the Temple of Juno Sospita which are incorporated into both the 10th century and 1599 north facades of the church. The dedication to St Nicholas was made by the Greek population in the area. In the 11th century, it was known as the church of Petrus Leonis, referring to the converted Jewish family who rebuilt the nearby Theatre of Marcellus as a fortress. The church was rebuilt in 1599, with a new facade by Giacomo della Porta (though the medieval campanile - originally a fortified tower, then adapted to a bell tower after being abandoned - was not altered).

Place Ville Marie, Montréal (architects I.M. Pei, with Ray AFFLECK, 1958-65), was developed as an entire city block by CN Real Estate. It was a phased development. The first to be constructed (1958-63) was the cruciform (cross-shaped) 45-storey tower, commonly called the Royal Bank Building; its grand plaza and lower office buildings, designed by internationally famous US architect I.M. Pei, helped to set new standards for architecture in Canada in the 1960s.

Theatre of Marcellus

The Theatre of Marcellus (Latin: Theatrum Marcelli; Italian: Teatro di Marcello) is an ancient edifice in the rione of Sant'Angelo, Rome, providing one of the city's many popular spectacles or tourist sites. It was named after Marcus Marcellus, Emperor Augustus's nephew, who died five years before its completion. Space for the theatre was cleared by Julius Caesar, who was murdered before it could be begun; the theatre was so far advanced by 17 BC that part of the celebration of the ludi saeculares took place within the theatre; it was completed in 13 BC and formally inaugurated in 12 BC by Augustus.

Temple of Apollo Sosianus

The Temple of Apollo Sosianus (previously known as the Apollinar and the temple of Apollo Medicus) is a Roman temple dedicated to Apollo in the Campus Martius, next to the Theatre of Marcellus and the Porticus Octaviae, in Rome, Italy. Its present name derives from that of its final rebuilder, Gaius Sosius. The three columns of the temple which survive to full-height today belong to the Augustan rebuild, but the cult of Apollo had existed in this area since at least to the mid 5th century BC when an Apollinar (a sacred grove or altar) was recorded on this site. The first temple building dates to 431 BC, when the consul Gnaeus Iulius Mento inaugurated one dedicated to Apollo Medicus (the doctor), in fulfilment of a vow to him during a plague of 2 years earlier. A radical reconstruction was begun by Gaius Sosius, probably just after his triumph in 34 BC. Upon the construction of the theatre of Marcellus soon afterwards the temple's frontal staircase was demolished and replaced with two staircases on the sides of the "pronaos".

The two dwelling towers of six and eight levels form a ‘gate’ from the shopping street to the urban park. They contain thirty-five apartments in the upper part and 900 m2 shopping area on the ground level. On the other side of the park a half open building block has been restored by attaching a new estate of twelve four-level city apartments and a slightly higher block of nine apartments and shops beneath. Wijkteam- en districtskantoor Linnaeusstraat, Politie Amsterdam

Two police stations, a parking lot, an employee’s restaurant and a cellblock are positioned in an even brick cover that reflects the surrounding scale of the city. The brick building is positioned next to a train viaduct at a busy access road of Amsterdam. Its scale, position and the treatment of the façade keep balance between a builder’s block and an object. Even though the brick facade structure is very abstract, the parking lot, corner windows and the changing fulfilment of the wooden window sills accomplish the result of a lively and expressive appearance. The extra windows positioned in the façade openings of the offices make it possible to open the windows despite high noise exposure. This also reduces the amount of maintenance of the transparent varnished window sills. Thanks to these differentiating additions and the absence of the window sills on the street corner at the entrance, the brick cover shows traces of the inside; for instance the access ramps of the garage wrapping themselves halfway up the building. The façade is of ambiguous character; it seems to be hiding the program, yet it actually shows its very physical projection. It is a filter, yet also a screen, build up with ingredients of the urban surroundings. Build: 2003 Architect: Piet R. J. Grouls

Palacio Arzobispal

Skolfield Whittier House

The Pejepscot Museum and The Skolfield-Whittier House Museum is located at 159 Park Row, along Brunswick's town green. The red brick buildings, of Italianate design, were built by the Skolfield brothers in 1858 and 1862. The Pejepscot Museum had a number of owners before becoming home to the Pejepscot Historical Society. The Skolfield-Whittier House was named after Alfred Skolfield, a successful sea captain, and Dr. Frank Whittier, one of America's first forensic pathologists. It remained the home of three generations of Skolfields and Whittiers and was eventually donated to the Society by Dr. Alice Skolfield-Whittier, Brunswick's first female pediatrician, in 1983. The home's Victorian interior and furnishings remain intact as of the day the family left.

TORINO, Italy

Kapellbrücke("Chapel Bridge"), Luzern (+3d-PDF by 3dHH)

(75 kB at 3cm/px photoresolution) The Kapellbrücke ("Chapel Bridge" in German) is a 204 m (670 ft) long bridge crossing the Reuss River in the city of Lucerne in Switzerland. It is the oldest wooden bridge in Europe, and one of Switzerland's main tourist attractions. The covered bridge, constructed in 1333, was designed to help protect the city of Lucerne from attacks. Inside the bridge are a series of paintings from the 17th century depicting events from Luzern's history. Much of the bridge, and the majority of these paintings, were destroyed in a 1993 fire, though it was quickly rebuilt. Adjoining the bridge is the 140 feet tall Wasserturm (Water Tower), an octagonal tower made from brick, which has served as a prison, torture chamber, watchtower and treasury. Today the tower, which is part of the city wall, is used as the guild hall of the artillery association. The tower and the bridge are Lucerne's trademark and form the most photographed monument in the country. The modell is simplified, but otpimized for GoogleEarth. There is also an interactive 3d-PDF with the model, where yuo can rotate and zoom the model inside the PDF without having GoogleEarth or SketchUp installed (see link below).
