Triborough Bridge - East River Span

Description
The suspension span of the Triborough bridge complex spans 420 meters over the East River and connects Queens to Ward's Island. The construction started on the 25th of october 1929, a day also known as Black Friday. When the New York Stock Exchange crashed, Triborough Bridge's future begun to look dark. The original plans had to be simplified by master bridge builder Othmar Ammann to save on building costs. The new design was a one deck design with a center span of 420 meters and 213 meter long side spans. The steel towers are 93 meters tall and represent art deco style. The four vertical posts between tower legs are just ornamentals. The deck has six raod lanes and two pedestrian lanes above the stiffening trusswork. It has 44 meters of clearance over the East River. The cables that support the deck are 51 centimeters thick and consist of 9,176 wires each. The construction lasted over six years, and the bridge was opened to traffic on the 11th of June, 1936. The bridge complex is very popular and approximately 200,000 vehicles use it every day. The toll revenues are enormous. In 2002 over 933 million dollars were collected.
