Protoplasm, Sculpture, Wellington, NZ

Description
I am looking at the study of matter, Protoplasm is the name given to the inside active part of any living cell. The pebbles and movement simulate the random active cells. "Protoplasm is so simple and yet it was so complex to make. It has taken around six years since I first had the idea to realising this work. I tested a plywood replica for many months in the face of the Canterbury Norwesters. "In this final Protoplasm, every structural member, being shafts and beams, is calculated to withstand the force that can be applied to the entire surface area. The bearings are over-engineered to a huge degree, to probably about ten times what is needed." Phil Price From: www.sculpture.org.nz

Invisible City, Sculpture by, Anton Parsons, Wellington, NZ
Description
Presented to the city with assistance from the Jack and Emma Griffin Charitable Trust and the Wellington City Council. The stainless steel of this sculpture seems to glow with an inner light. The magnified Braille text suggests a message, but the artist chooses to deny us access, raising issues of communication in the contemporary world, and the difficult interface between the disabled and the rest of the community. "Invisible City is an appropriate public work because it functions on several levels: Aesthetics – even without understanding that the dots on the two boxes are braille text, Invisible City is an aesthetically pleasing object – it doesn’t have to be read to be appreciated. Tactile – it is made to be touched. Surface – Invisible City is polished stainless steel, and reflects its surroundings. When looking at it you see a reflection of Wellington." Fran Wilde Walkway, Wellington, NZ
Description
Mayor Kerry Prendergast will officially open the Fran Wilde Walk, the elevated walkway leading up to the Stadium from the Train station, at 5.30pm 08.06.05. Fran Wilde was Mayor between 1992 and 1995 as well as chair of the Wellington Regional Stadium Trust. Work began on securing a site in 1993 and some major hurdles were traversed in getting to the final official opening by Governor-General at the time, Sir Michael Hardie-Boys on 3 January 2000. Mayor Prendergast said naming the elevated walkway into the Stadium the Fran Wilde Walk was a fitting tribute to the dedication, determination and commitment of Ms Wilde to ensure Wellington got a new stadium. Zephyrometer, Sculpture by Phil Price. Wellington, NZ
Buildings uploaded for August 29, 2007
Presented to the city in 2003, sponsored by Meridian Energy, and assisted by the Wellington City Council. This sculpture is the second kinetic work by Phil Price to be installed in Wellington. The dynamic mast-like structure graphically marks out the strength and direction of the prevailing wind with an elegant swaying motion. The shape, construction and movements of the sculpture are beautifully reflective of the site adjacent to the Evan’s Bay Marina. "It is a giant-sized yet beautiful machine. Its gentle lurching will in its own way gauge the wind of Wellington. It is a type of free-form gauge with a considerable reliance on precision engineering, which I am enjoying because, as well as the work being a scientific concept, it is also a science to design and build. It is like any well-designed object where the beauty is derived through its need to function." Phil Price From: www.sculpture.org.nz

The Massey Memorial at Point Halswell, Wellington.

Description
The Massey Memorial at Point Halswell, Wellington, commemorates William Ferguson Massey who was Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1912-1925. Originally known by its Maori name, Kaitawharo ('to eat jellyfish'), Point Halswell, was renamed after the Commissioner of Native Reserves, Edmond Halswell, who arrived in New Zealand in 1841. In 1886, because of fears about Russia's presence in the Pacific following the Crimean War, an 8" gun emplacement was constructed on the site. The gun pit was later incorporated into the design of William Ferguson Massey's tomb underneath the Memorial. Shortly after Massey's death in 1925, the Massey Burial-ground Act was passed allocating land at Point Halswell to be set aside as a burial ground for him and his widow. Public subscriptions raised funds totalling £5,000 and the government contributed £10,000. Auckland architects Gummer and Ford and consulting architect Samuel Hurst Seager were engaged to design a fitting tomb and memorial. Gummer and Ford were responsible for designing numerous war memorials around New Zealand, including the National War Memorial in Wellington. Seager had also designed a number of memorials in New Zealand, and is best known for the New Zealand War Memorial at Chunuk Bair, Gallipoli. From: www.mch.govt.nz

Tower Bridge, London

Description
Built in 1894, Tower Bridge is one of the most recognisable structures in London. Standing 65m above its platforms it is the tallest bridge going across the Thames. When first built, steam engines would pump to drive the 1000 ton bascules up to full height in less than a minute. Today they are powered electrically. In 1952 a red London bus jumped a 3ft gap between the bascules after a traffic light was stuck on go. A number of pilots have attempted to fly under Tower Bridge with at least one hitting the Thames and dying. The space between it is only 65m x 30m.

The Upstream Building (Shell Centre), London

W.D. Petersen Memorial Music Pavilion

Description
"The W.D. Petersen Memorial Pavilion is a concrete structure constructed on a raised stone podium. The structure features beautiful ornamental details that make it a truly outstanding construction. With a decidedly exotic character, the Petersen Pavilion stands seperate from the restrained Classical Revival acrchitecture that, at the time of its construction, surrounded it (i.e. Union Station, Lend-a-Hand building.) The structure features Corinthian columns with twisted-rope shafts, minaret-shaped pinnacles, iron grated windows, and side niches. Decorative pattern work at the roofline is complex and visually active. Many of the decorative details are finished in vivid colors of blue, green, and gold, set in bold contidiction to the neutrality of the stone. The net result is an exotic and timeless beauty, a welcome surprise in this Midwestern river city." Description provided by: qcmemory.org
http://www.qcmemory.org/

Union Station and Burlington Freight House

Description
"The Union Station and Burlington Freight House are two freestanding structures adjoined by a wood post and beam shelter. The Union Station is Classical Revival in style, with many elements (created of concrete) used to define the character of the style and lend the sense of timelessness associated with the Classical Revival. A stylized Greek temple front, applied to call attention to the building's primary entrances, dominates the structure's north and south elevations. The temple front features four engaged columns with tapered, square shafts and stylized capitals. The columns support a Classical entablature, complete with dentils, round medallions, and stepped fascia. The heavy cornice introduced by the entablature of the temple front carries around the perimeter of the building. Additional gravitas is created by the use of a heavy foundation, resembling the raised podium of the Greek temple. The Burlington Freight House is a single-story structure, built with the same materials used in the Union Station." Both buildings were constructed in 1924, and are currently listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Information provided by www.qcmemory.org.

First National Bank Building

Description
"The First National Bank Building is a nine-story, steel frame and brick construction, built on a concrete foundation and faced in stone. The bank building features stylistic details evoking the Renaissance Revival, a style that combines classical precedents with forms more strictly associated with the sixteenth century Italian Renaissance. In this building the historic elements of the style, namely the use of Roman-arched openings, fluted pilasters, and classical frieze, are combined with the technological advances of the Chicago School. The result is a restrained and elegant version of what Svendsen (MRA 1983) describes as a 'tall office building.' While the form of the First National Bank Building is restrained, the applied decoration is not. Stone relief panels, the content of which addresses patriot and agrarian motifs, cover the spandrels of the arched openings, and the wall surface of the barrel vaulted entrance. Similar panels of bronze are located over the door of the primary entrance. " www.qcmemory.org. This building is currently known as the US Bank Building and was built in 1923.

Davenport City Hall

Description
"The four-story Davenport City Hall is constructed of sandstone in the monumental style known as the Richardsonian Romanesque. As in this building, the style is generally expressed in stone and commonly integrates elements such as Roman arches, rusticated stone, and towers; all found in the Davenport City Hall. In addition, the building incorporates gable ends and corner towers in a complex, assymmetrical form. The net result is a structure of great mass and visual character. The Davenport City Hall was constructed in 1895 to house the offices of the Davenport city government, after a design by Davenport architect, John W. Ross. The building has functioned in that capacity from the time of its construction. Several additions have been made to the north side of the building. Davenport City Hall was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Then, as now, the building was considered significant under Criterion A in its association with the history of city government. In addition, the building is considered significant under Criterion C as an important, and increasingly rare, expression of the Richardsonian Romanesque style." (www.qcmemory.org)

Downtown Davenport Public Library

Description
The first public library in Davenport was built in 1904 using various funding, including a $75,000 donation from Andrew Carnegie. After becoming outdated and dilapidated, the Carnegie building was torn down in 1966. "Through the efforts of Library Board president C.D. Waterman, Jr., internationally known architect Edward Durrell Stone, who also designed the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC agreed to design the new library building. The new building design included a large open ground floor with a mezzanine and integrated the new children's wing. The new Davenport Public Library building was dedicated and opened October, 6 1968. While some changes have been made in the interior layout, the library building continues to serve the ever-changing library needs of Davenport citizens." (www.qcmemory.org)

Davenport Skybridge

Description
"Holabird & Root's award-winning glass and steel pedestrian bridge is the new destination for residents and visitors of Davenport, Iowa, to experience the Mississippi riverfront. The structure, a distinctive cable-stayed style bridge with 99-foot high columns, spans 575 feet over a parking garage, highway, and heavily used railroad tracks as part of the city's “River Renaissance” redevelopment project. At night, LED lights create a rainbow of colors and penetrate translucent glass panels set into the floor of the walkway, illuminating the streetscape below." (www.holabird.com)

Midwest One Bank and Row Building

Description
The Midwest One Bank Building is a 6-story office building built in 1981. The adjoining building was built in the late 19th Century and designed by Architect Frederick Claussen. It was originally designed as "highly ornate, in keeping with the exuberance of the Victorian era." It was given a new facade in 1910, and became the Beiderbecke & Miller Store. The redesign of the facade had influences in the Chicago School. Information and quote provided by www.qcmemory.org

Parker and Putnam Buildings

Description
The Parker and Putnam buildings are two sister structures with a 2 story infill building in between. The Putnam Building (128 W. 2nd Street) was designed by D.H. Burnham & Co. and completed in 1910. The Parker Building (104 W. 2nd Street) was a modified version of the Burnham design by Graham, Anderson, Probst & White and was built in 1922. Both buildings are built on a steel skeleton with red brick exterior. "The Putnam Building was occupied by numerous retail and professional buisinesses over the course of its history. Most notable among them include the Davenport Public Museum's (now the Putnam Museum of History and Natural Science) historical library, located on the eighth floor, the H.E. Scharff Store (c.1928-1956), and the Simon & Landauer Department Store, which occupied a portion of the storefront from 1933-c.1964." The M.L. Parker department store occupied the Parker Building until 1972. Information provided by www.qcmemory.com

It was built in 1918. 112 W. 3rd Street (directly to the west of the Scott County Bank) at one time stretched from Brady Street to its current western wall, but part the eastern part of the building was demolished to allow the Scott County Bank Building to be built. (1920), Posner & Spiedell, clothing (1930), Old Timer (1935), and the El Dorado Club (1940). 114 W. 3rd Street is known as the Donahue Building has elements of the Italian Renaissance Revival, including Roman arched heads and the central projecting pavilion. The building has been home to a turkish bath in the late 19th Century as well as the main offices for the Davenport Water Co. Update on images in RSS feed.

Awhile ago, Aron from Rubinium.org asked why the pictures were not showing up in his RSS reader. After some research and asking around, this is what I have found out.
1) Most RSS readers don't like the iframe tag.
2) The automatic embed code from the Google Warehouse uses iframes.

I have talked to the good folks at the Google 3D Warehouse and they have put in a ticket for a "Feature Request" to possibly change the embed code. Hopefully this will happen soon, and when it does I will let you know. So, until then, please have patience all you RSS subscribers! Relief is hopefully on the way!

Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires ( Casa Matriz)

Description

XIX. In the southern part some traces of the old Roman walls and towers are visible, over which the houses were built. There also remains a single arch of the aqueduct that used to bring water to the city from Collserola.

Looks like we have another city added to Cities In Development. The folks at Google have been busy. Let’s all welcome Milwaukee Wisconsin! Schemiel, Shomazel, Hossenferrer incorportated! (at least I think that is how “it” goes!)

Milwaukee Wisconsin

Chase Tower - Milwaukee WI

Description
The Chase tower is a highrise building right by the Milwaukee river in the downtown area of Milwaukee . The building is one of the shorter highrises in Downtown Milwaukee with a height of 282'. Milwaukee is one of the great treasures of Wisconsin with just about 2,000,000 people in it's main metro area , but not many people know that Chicago's metro area and Milwaukee's metro area have started to grow together sort of . So technically , Milwaukee and Chicago combined has over 11,000,000 people in the area . Other great artists on Google sketchup should help me model Milwaukee , because it is really a magnificent , yet kind-of small , but major city .Go to http://www.emporis.com , and then type in Milwaukee WI to find a complete list of buildings there .

Milwaukee Art Museum

Description
The history of the Milwaukee Art Museum dates back to 1888, when Milwaukee was a thriving port city. Peoples from different regions of Europe came to Wisconsin with their varied art and design styles. The Milwaukee Art Society developed and the first art gallery was designed and built. Later came the Milwaukee Art Institute, and in 1955, a new building was designed by Finnish Architect Eero Saarinen. It can be seen to the north of the current Milwaukee Art Museum design, which was designed by Santiago Calatrava after he was chosen as architect of the new project in 1994. It started groundbreaking in 1997 and was completed in 2001. The Quadracci Pavilion, the name of this expansion, was Calatrava's first building in the US. Model created by Zach Moore.
